Backgammon: how a round works

Make Backgammon your next activity in the game library. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Practice with a purpose

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Use the example to check your reasoning.

The goal to keep in mind

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

The order of play

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

How to use the controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

See the idea in action

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Look for the relevant detail.

Where a round can go wrong

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Compare the situation with the worked example. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
